Leading 1-0 in the three-match ODI series, India suffered a drubbing at the hand of Australia in the 2nd ODI on Sunday in Vishakhapatnam. After being bundled out for 117 inside just 26 overs, India suffered a defeat with all 10 of Australia’s wickets intact and 234 balls to spare, the most ever in India men’s ODI history. Previous worst was 212 balls remaining against New Zealand in January 2019.

Captain Rohit Sharma was visibly distraught post-match as he said, “It is just disappointing We didn’t apply ourselves with the bat. Didn’t put enough runs on the board. It wasn’t a 117 wicket. Kept losing wickets and that didn’t allow us to get the runs we wanted.”

Narrating the early fall of wickets, the Indian skipper further added, “Once we lost Shubman in the first over, myself and Virat got 30-35 runs quickly. But then I lost my wicket and we lost we lost a couple of wickets back to back. That put us on the back foot. It’s always tough to come back from that situation. Today wasn’t the day for us.”

While the duo of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head scored half centuries to see through the chase, it was left arm quick Mitchell Starc who laid the foundation of Australia’s win, picking four wickets in the powerplay and finishing the innings with his 9th ODI fifer, first in India.

“Starc is a quality bowler,” Rohit said post-match. “He has been doing it for Australia with the new ball. He kept bowling to his strength. Swung the new ball and took the odd ball away. Kept the batters guessing.”

On Mitchell Marsh, who now has back to back fifties opening for Australia in the absence of David Warner, Rohit added, “Marsh has to be one of the top players going around when it comes to power hitting. He backs himself to do that every now and then. Definitely in top 3 and 4 when it comes to power hitting.”
