I’m not going to throw my name into some headlines about this: Glenn Maxwell on David Warner-Mitchell Johnson feud

The Warner-Johnson tiff has been brewing for a while with the former pacer digging up the 2018 ball-tampering ‘sandpaper’ gate that had banished Warner, along with Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft, for a year.

With the feud between former Australia teammates David Warner and Mitchell Johnson refusing to die, Oz ace Glenn Maxwell refused to be drawn into the fire even though he stood by Warner’s selection in the Test team for the upcoming Pakistan series.

“I’m not going to throw my name into some headlines about this. But Davey’s been an absolute champion of Australian cricket for a long period of time and the selectors were pretty clear on what they thought of it (selecting him). I’m looking forward to seeing Davey in that first Test and him making a lot of runs this summer,” Maxwell said in an interaction with Australian radio station SEN.

“It’s been five years and David Warner has still never really owned the ball-tampering scandal. Now the way he is going out is underpinned by more of the same arrogance and disrespect to our country,” Johnson wrote in Sydney Morning Herald on the Warner’s selection in the Test series, which is likely to be his farewell.

“As we prepare for David Warner’s farewell series, can somebody please tell me why?,” Johnson added.

Maxwell, meanwhile, also put his hat in for selection in the Australian Test team when they go on tour to Sri Lanka in 2025, saying that he could be a real viable option in the subcontinent owing to his recent form there.

“I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side,” he said to SEN.

People who have seen his double century against Afghanistan in the recently concluded World Cup and his blistering ton against India in the 3rd T20I would no doubt agree with him.
