Ashes: Another intriguing last day up ahead, where every result still possible
A captivating narrative was taking form and shape when incessant rain prematurely ended the fourth day’s play at the Oval. In pursuit of 384 runs that would see Australia winning a series in England after 22 years of wait and hurt, the visitors produced their best opening stand of the series— David Warner and Usman Khawaja stitching 135 hassle-free runs—before the clouds burst and rain washed the ground an hour into the second session.
Nonetheless, it promises another intriguing final day, where results of every kind are still possible. Australia could go for glory or dead-bat to a draw and win the series; England’s bowlers could deliver a searing account of their skills and smarts to square the series and prolong Australia’s wait for a series triumph. Broad would pour his skill and heart out, as he had all through the glorious career, to bow out on a high, without ever having lost an Ashes series at home. His bunny and bête noire, Warner, would nurse other plans. Ironic it would be if Warner scores a hundred in his final innings in England on the final day of Broad’s Test career. There lurks a probability that, if Warner does not convert his 58 not out into a sizable knock, this could be his last outing in the Baggy Green too. Even in their final bout, the stakes could not have been higher for the pair. (READ MORE)

Nothing much to report from the middle as it's still raining. We are in for a long wait but here's keeping our fingers crossed that the day is not washed out.
Well, well, well. The players had made their way out in the middle to restart proceedings but they are heading back in again as it has started to rain.
Huge shout for a catch out as the ball is off Smith to Stokes. It was caught but Stokes wasn't in control and that's been ruled out. He took the catch but while his hands were coming down, it hits his thingh and the ball gets dropped. There will be some talks about that one. And that's that for the first session. It's lunch now. There's a review now as Broad seems convinced for a LBW. Nothing off the bat as replays show but the wickets are missing. England lose a review. AUS 141/1, need 243 to win
Square leg drops back to the fence! Broad, on his last day of Test cricket, comes up with the double bluff as Khawaja, who is expecting the shorter one, is stagnent at the crease and hangs his bat out to defend, but misses the ball. Close shave! Score after 41 overs, AUS: 140/0
Players from Australia and England are out in the middle. The weather is gloomy and grey and it seems there will be rain at some point but for now England are ready with Broad at the top of his mark. And here we go... a quiet first over and just one run from the over. Score after 39 overs, AUS: 136/0
We're waiting. A bit of a shower has caused a delayed start. Covers are coming off. Barmy Army have tweeted - "It’s stopped drizzling".
Chris Broad has revealed that he never thought that his son Stuart Broad would ever made it to the first-class level, forget playing international cricket. “Thank you to Leicestershire for seeing the ability of him as a bowler because I didn’t see that, and I was looking at his batting and I thought, well, I don’t really think he’s going to make it in first-class cricket as a batsman,” Chris Broad told BBC TMS. “But they saw him as a bowler, gave him the opportunity.” (READ MORE)
As always there are layers and layers within layers, a maze of interwoven plots and subplots. Pat Cummins would know the backlash he would countenance if he returned home without a series win; his counterpart Ben Stokes would be aware of the chastening that awaits his team’s guiding philosophy, if he loses this series. The Ashes, thus, head to the final day as it began on the first day, with the series, honour, and pride at stake.
No team has chased down more than 263 at The Oval -- a record set by England against Australia back in 1902 -- although 10 sides have scored more than 300 on their way to draws at the south London ground. Australia retained the Ashes after the fourth test was washed out, leaving them 2-1 up in the series. They are hoping to win the series outright, however, to become the first Australian side to do so in England since 2001.
Australia's opening pair of David Warner Usman Khawaja withstood a barrage of hostile bowling as they steamed past 100 on their way to the highest opening partnership in the Ashes in England since 2009. James Anderson floored Warner with an unintended beamer when Australia were just short of a hundred, the batter managing to fend off the shoulder-height ball with his bat handle.
Fast bowler Mark Wood hit Khawaja on the helmet with a bouncer, leading to a lengthy concussion check before the rain set in.
England and Australia battle one last time. After the fourth day's play in the final Ashes test at The Oval on Sunday was abandoned due to rain after Australian openers David Warner (58) and Usman Khawaja (69) shared a partnership of 135 as they chase a target of 384 to beat England, fans will be praying for weather gods to show some mercy. Will we have a full game or will it be a washout? Stay tuned for live updates.
