‘What are these guys smoking?’: Dodda Ganesh flabbergasted on India A’s decision to not send Vaibhav Suryavanshi in Super Over vs Bangladesh A

The narrative coming out of the match was why India had chosen to keep Suryavanshi on the bench during the Super over with the 14-year-old already scoring a swift 38 runs in 15 balls in the run chase.

After India A were knocked out by Bangladesh A via Super Over in the Asia Cup Rising Stars semifinal on Friday, there were a lot of questions on why big hitter Vaibhav Suryavanshi wasn’t sent out to bat in the Super Over. Former India and Karnataka cricketer Dodda Ganesh was one of the people who reacted with disbelief at India’s decision to leave out Suryavanshi in the Super Over.

“Not sending Vaibhav Suryavamshi to bat in the Super over? What are these guys smoking? #AsiaCup,” Ganesh posted on X. A lot of eyebrows were raised at the start of India’s innings of the Super Over when Jitesh Sharma and Ramandeep Singh waltzed out in the middle with Suryavanshi in the shed.

The decision would prove to be a mistake when Ripon Mondol castled Jitesh in the very first ball with a devastating yorker. India would then elect to send Ashutosh Sharma in the middle who was caught by Zawad Abrar in the extra cover region leading to India posting 0 runs in the Super Over.

Needing just 1 to win, India looked to be heading for a miracle when Suyash Sharma taking Yasir Ali’s wicket in the first ball. But it was ultimately not to be as Sharma bowled a wide the very next ball which ended the match on a rather anti-climactic note with Bangladesh moving on to the final.

But the narrative coming out of the match was why India had chosen to keep Suryavanshi on the bench during the Super over with the 14-year-old already scoring a swift 38 runs in 15 balls in the run chase. With that knock, he also became the highest run scorer of the tournament with 239 runs.

On India’s decision to not play Suryavanshi, skipper Jitesh Sharma said, “They are masters of powerplay (Vaibhav and Priyansh) but in the death me, Ashu and Raman are who can hit at will. So it was team decision and my decision.”
