‘Delhi Capitals has best spin attack but will be in trouble without solid opener’: Aakash Chopra

Aside from du Plessis and Fraser-McGurk, Donovan Ferreira was traded out to Rajasthan Royals, while Sediqullah Atal, Manvanth Kumar, Mohit Sharma, and Darshan Nalkande were released.

Delhi Capitals released their opening pair, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Faf du Plessis, among a total of seven players ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction.

Looking ahead, Delhi will be in the market for a gun opener. The team experimented with several combinations in IPL 2025, trying Abhishek Porel, du Plessis, and Fraser-McGurk at the top before settling on KL Rahul to open alongside Du Plessis. Commenting on this, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra said releasing Fraser-McGurk was the “absolutely right decision” and that DC now needs an overseas opening batter.

“Delhi released Jake Fraser-McGurk. He was very expensive, so releasing him was absolutely right. Delhi’s opening was a game of musical chairs, Abhishek Porel, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Faf du Plessis, eventually KL Rahul, and I think Karun Nair may have opened once,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“They tried everyone, and you wondered why so many changes were required when they were doing so well. Now that you have released Jake, a lot of money is freed up. You can quickly bring in an overseas opening batter because they don’t need Indians; it’s a very good Indian core,” he added.

Aside from du Plessis and Fraser-McGurk, Donovan Ferreira was traded out to Rajasthan Royals, while Sediqullah Atal, Manvanth Kumar, Mohit Sharma, and Darshan Nalkande were released.

Chopra pointed out that DC will have the best spin bowling attack in the league but could find themselves in trouble without a solid opener.

“No one will have better spin bowling than them, so they are actually in a very good space. They need someone at the top to settle the opening combination. If that isn’t settled, you will find yourself in trouble. They have let Faf du Plessis go, so they got ₹2 crore from there as well. They have money, and they don’t have to buy much,” he said.

“They can strengthen the overseas contingent a little more. They might not get Jonny Bairstow, even if they want him, because Kolkata might want him, and some other team might also be thinking the same. They don’t have enough money to win that one-to-one battle. It could be Tim Seifert or Jamie Smith, or someone else,” Chopra observed.
