The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has received applications for the position of coach, manager and selectors for the upcoming season.
The deadline for submitting the CVs ended on Wednesday and the state’s cricketing body received a total of 74 applications for various positions. All the candidates have been called for the interview round, which begins at the Feroz Shah Kotla, New Delhi, on Thursday.
The interviews will be conducted by Vivek Razdan, Chetan Chauhan, Gange Gupta and Salil Seth – all part of the selection panel appointed by Justice (retired) Mukul Mudgal.
Not all candidates who have applied meet criteria. For instance, Vinay Lamba has applied for the selector’s position but he is not India capped — one of the criteria laid down by the panel. Similarly, Venkat Sundaram, former Delhi veteran, has also applied for senior selection panel but he too has not played for India.
There are plenty of familiar faces in the list of applicants as former Delhi coaches Vijay Dahiya and Amit Bhandari have again thrown their hat in the ring. Member of India’s 1996 World Cup squad Aashish Kapoor has also applied. Former Delhi veteran Bhaskar Pillai’s name is also on the list of the applicants but he has never played for India. He was only a standby for India’s tour of Sri Lanka in 1985 but was a prolific run-getter for Delhi in the domestic circuit.
For the post of selectors for the senior team, the applicants include former India players Nikhil Chopra, Atul Wassan, Gursharan Singh, Sarandeep Singh, Robin Singh jr. For the junior panel, former India players Maninder Singh and Chetan Sharma have applied along with former Delhi players Chetnya Nanda and Bantu Singh.
Salil Seth, convenor of the panel which will decide on the posts of selectors — three senior and three junior — said that those who don’t meet the criteria won’t be picked. “Our requirements have been beforehand listed and this is just the list of people who have applied.”
The panel is expected to decide on the coach by Thursday while the names of the selectors and managers will be finalised the following day.
The appointment of the two panels, one for the women and one for the men, had not gone down well with a majority of the directors who felt that Justice Mudgal was overstepping his brief but a rap from the High Court which issued a contempt of court notice has seen them fall in line.
