Anil Kumble’s journey from player to official to India coach

Anil Kumble has gone from a cricketer to skipper to mentor to cricketing official and now is India's national team coach.

Former Test cricketer and captain Anil Kumble was on Thursday named coach of the Indian team for a one-year tenure by BCCI after consulting with the Cricket Advisory Committee. The announcement was made in Dharamsala after the press conference was delayed by an hour.

Here’s a look at Kumble’s journey from a player to an official with BCCI and to coach.

# August 1990: Anil Kumble makes his Test debut against England and picks up three wickets in the first inning. In the second inning though he fails to weave his magic and finishes with zero. A timid display results in omission for the subsequent Test and from the squad for two years.

# April 1990: Makes his ODI debut against Sri Lanka. Plays another game in the Austral-Asia Cup against Pakistan and ends up with two wickets.

# September 1992: A superb performance in the Irani Trophy (13/138) earns him a call-back into the Indian side for tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa. In the second Test against the Proteas, Kumble establishes himself with eight wickets and a total of 18 wickets in four Tests and three against Zimbabwe.

# February 1993: Plays his first home Test series against England and takes 21 wickets to make himself a mainstay in the team.

# March 1993: Reaches 50 Test wickets in just his 10th match.

# November 1993: Registers bowling figures of 6/12 against West Indies – the best bowling figures by an Indian in ODIs. The record stood for a decade.

# January 1994: Takes his first 10-wicket haul to finish with 11/128 against Sri Lanka.

# October 1995: Picks up his 100th wicket against New Zealand in his 21st Test at home in Bangalore. His 100th, 300th and 400th wicket all come at Bangalore.

# 1996: Named Wisden’s Cricketer of the Year.

# September 1998: Becomes first spinner and second Indian to take 200 wickets in ODIs.

# February 1999: Picks up a staggering 10-wickets in Pakistan’s second innings in Delhi to become the second bowler to take 10-wickets in a single inning. The win would be India’s first against Pakistan in Tests in 19 years.

# April 2004: Four wickets on fourth day of final Test help India beat Pakistan for first-ever series win in the neighbouring country.

# October 2004: Becomes second Indian to take 400 wickets – in his 85th Test.

# December 2004: Becomes India’s leading Test wicket taker – going past Kapil Dev – against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

# July 2006: Bowls India to first win in the Caribbean in 35 years with a match-winning spell of 6/78 at Sabina Park.

# March 2007: Retires from ODIs having played 271 matches and picking up 337 wickets.

# August 2007: Scores maiden Test ton against England at the Oval. Also becomes the third highest wicket taker in Tests after going past Glenn McGrath.

# November 2007: Chosen captain of the Indian team after Rahul Dravid resigned and Sachin Tendulkar’s refusal. Captains the side for tour to Pakistan and Australia.

# January 2008: Picks up his 600th scalp – that of Andrew Symonds.

# November 2008: Hangs up his boots in the Test department too after 619 wickets to his name having played 132 matches. Finishes third in the all-time wicket-takers charts behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.

# April 2009: Playing the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore, he picks up five-wickets for just five runs against Rajasthan Royals. Finishes the tournament as most successful spin bowler and second highest wicket taker with 21 wickets.

# November 2010: Elected as president of Karnataka State Cricket Association alongside former teammates Venkatesh Prasad and Javagal Srinath in other roles.

# January 2012: Retires from IPL and is appointed as chief mentor to RCB.

# October 2012: Appointed as chairman of ICC Cricket Committee.

# January 2013: Quits from the post with RCB and takes over at Mumbai Indians.

# November 2015: Quits from Mumbai Indians as chief mentor.

# June 2016: Appointed as coach of the Indian cricket team.
