Ab de Villiers says Abhishek Sharma will enjoy Australian conditions: ‘There’s quite a bit of bounce…He likes freeing up his arms’

Abhishek Sharma, in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2025, has slammed 314 runs from seven games at a strike rate of 200 and an average of 44.86. His starts in the tournament have rattled the opposition and given India a head start in the games. However, he will fare in different conditions across the globe. India will tour Australia for a five-match T20I series, in which former South African cricketer Ab de Villiers predicted that Abhishek is going to enjoy the conditions Down Under.

Abhishek Sharma is in the form of the life, some are saying he is the best opening batter in the world right now in this format. Will be great to see what he can get over there in Australia. I think he will enjoy the conditions because there’s quite a bit of bounce,” observed de Villiers, speaking on his YouTube channel. “He likes freeing up his arms over the off-side, opening up the blade, covering the point to third man boundary, hitting sixes over there. He can also clear up or open up the leg side as well. All round player, fantastic batter to watch.”

Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Simon Helmot, speaking to The Indian Express, brings up a change Abhishek made last year that has helped in that aspect. “It’s more about his stance. He’s adjusted and slightly… He’s become more relaxed at the crease, not as tense and rigid. He’s able to access both sides of the ground. He’s able to get in really good positions. Doesn’t over-complicate the way in which he plays. He’s quite still at the point of impact,” he says.

“He plays the ball quite late. He presents a wonderful bat face. His head is in a beautiful, steady position. He watches the ball intently and can get himself in easy positions to be able to access various sides of the ground … It’s more mental for Abhi. He’s always been touted with lots of ability and skill, and now we’re seeing that start to flourish. That comes with mental toughness, a greater understanding of your own game.”
