Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025, Round 1 Highlights: Gukesh, who was playing with white pieces against Anish Giri, has won his first game as the world champion in the first round of the Tata Steel Chess tournament. This was Gukesh's first game after becoming the youngest world champion in the history of chess. Gukesh was in New Delhi on Friday accepting the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award from President Droupadi Murmu and flew directly to the Netherlands to play in an event which has been called the Wimbledon of chess. Meanwhile, in the battle royale between the two Indians, the veteran Pentala Harikrishna took down Arjun Erigaisi, who is currently the top-ranked Indian in the world after a long battle. Harikrishna had seconded Gukesh at the World Chess Championship recently. Elsewhere, Leon Luke Mendonca lost to Gukesh's other second from the World Championship, Vincent Keymer, after forcing the German GM in trouble in the middle game. In another game, Praggnanandhaa was in deep trouble on the clock and on the board against Nodirbek Abdusattorov, before the Uzbek grandmaster erred and allowed the Indian to get out of jail. The game ended in a draw. In the challengers section, Vaishali Rameshbabu defeated Argentina's Faustino Oro while Nodirbek Yakubboev defeated IM Divya Deshmukh.
