Indonesia Open LIVE: After ‘lowest low’, Satwik-Chirag one step away from another high as they reach Indonesia Open final

Making a men’s doubles final at the Istora Senayan arena in Jakarta is akin to running up a summit clash at Lord’s or Wimbledon; it’s the spiritual home of badminton, and men’s doubles is an absolutely beloved Indonesian event. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty scored a thrilling come-from-behind 17-21, 21-19, 21-18 victory over Koreans Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae in the semifinals of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 to set up a Sunday final at the iconic venue.

A Super 1000 is comparable to the All England. A win will catapult them into history-making terrain, and also afford them a chuckle: the Indonesians fielded five pairs in the main draw, and it was the Indians who might emerge triumphant in front of the home aficionados, writes Shivani Naik.

It had been a rough time for the India pairing, after the Sudirman Cup debacle where they failed to register a win. Then within a fortnight, they were ousted from Singapore Open in Round 1 and had spoken of encountering their ‘lowest low’ as a combination. After a 10-match streak at the Asian Championship title victory, early exits from Thailand and Singapore had dipped the morale.

The Indians had drubbed one of the five, the World No 1 pair of Indonesians Alfian/Adrianto, in straight sets in the quarterfinals. Three of the Top 10 ranked doubles pairs are Indonesians.

A win will catapult them into history-making terrain, and also afford them a chuckle: the Indonesians fielded five pairs in the main draw, and it was the Indians who might emerge triumphant in front of the home aficionados. (READ MORE)
