Many new parents struggle with health issues that may affect their newborns. But instead of panicking, they must follow a few steps that can help improve the child’s health, especially when they have a fever.

“When your child has a fever, it’s normal to feel anxious but don’t let fear lead you to make hasty decisions. Stay informed and calm; your child will benefit from your thoughtful care,” Dr Nihar Parekh, wrote on Instagram as he busted 3 common myths.

Wrapping the child in blankets: Keeping your child cool is crucial. “Avoid bundling them up or turning off the fans/AC. Let them stay comfortably cool to help regulate their temperature,” said Dr Parekh.

Medicine time: Giving medicine on an empty stomach is effective, so don’t force feed your child because they have to take medicines.

Vitamin dilemma: “Pause the multivitamins while they’re on fever medication. Their body needs to focus on healing, not additional supplements,” said Dr Parekh.

Taking a cue, we decided to ask some experts whether these steps can help tackle fever and what more can be done.

A fever can significantly affect a parent’s mood creating feelings of agitation, frustration, irritation, stress, guilt, and anger, said Dr Jagdish Kathwate, consultant neonatologist and paediatrician, Motherhood Hospital Kharadi Pune.

However, without causing much delay, parents are advised to check the temperature of their child with the help of a thermometer. “This will provide valuable insight into their current situation. It is important to note that not all fevers are dangerous, some can be caused due to environmental and lifestyle factors,” said Dr Kathwate.

Once it is confirmed that your child has a fever, make sure that you dress him/her in light and breathable fabrics. “You can encourage them to drink plenty of water or ORS to keep them hydrated (if not a newborn). Be attentive about the symptoms they are experiencing such as vomiting, body pain, hot flashes, excessive sweat, nausea, headache, extreme tiredness, and lack of energy,” mentioned Dr Kathwate.

If these symptoms start to aggravate then consider taking them to a doctor. “Do not rely on home remedies or provide them with over-the-counter medication without a doctor’s prescription. The doctor may evaluate your child’s condition and may prescribe some medications and injections if needed,” cautioned Dr Kathwate.

Your child may become fussy when it comes to eating food, especially during fever. “Make sure that you feed them light and easy-to-digest foods such as khichdi, porridge, or soups for the betterment of their health. Do not force-feed as it will only worsen their mood and even the digestive tract,” said Dr Kathwate.

A nap or sound sleep for a few hours can help them relax and retain energy.
