Shriya Pilgaonkar adheres to her dermatologist’s advice to avoid sun spots. In one of her 2024 interviews, the Mandala Murders actor shared that she carries her sunscreen everywhere. “My dermat recently reminded me that sunscreen should be applied thrice a day, not just once, especially when it’s hot, and I have been developing sun spots, which I quite like,” she told Pinkvilla.
Should sunscreen really be reapplied at least three times a day?
Most individuals believe that applying sunscreen once in the morning is sufficient for a full day of sun protection for their skin. However, sunscreen does start to wear off after a period of time, even when you are inside with exposure to windows or screens, noted Dr Shweta Nakhawa, consultant dermatologist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane.
According to Dr Nakhawa, reapplication is recommended two to three times a day to ensure ongoing protection against sun damage and pigmentation.
Why is putting on sunscreen just once not enough?
A single application during the morning might not last until the evening. According to Dr Nakhawa, UV radiation continues to impact the skin whenever the sun is out, even when it rains, as the sun’s rays can penetrate through cloud cover. “Gradually, this exposure leads to tanning, sunspots, premature ageing, and in some instances, boosts the chances of skin cancers. That’s why frequent reapplication is necessary,” said Dr Nakhawa.
What are the advantages of using sunscreen often?
-Prevents sunspots and pigmentation
-Lowers the risk of early wrinkles and fine lines
-Saves skin from damaging UVA and UVB sunrays
-Preserves an even complexion
What should one consider when selecting a sunscreen?
Dr Nakhawa recommended selecting a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a PA+++ rating and SPF 30 or above. “Gel-based or matte-finish types for oily or acne skin. Dry skin can be treated with creamy types. Applying an adequate amount is also necessary for the face and neck,” said Dr Nakhawa.
