Healthy skin can’t be achieved miraculously in a day! On the contrary, it takes a lot of time and the right techniques and products to achieve good skin over a period of time. As such, it is advised to pay attention to your skin while you are still young so that you do not make mistakes that can cost you dearly in the future. Dr Kiran Shetty, a dermatologist, listed three things that should be included in the skincare regime while you are young.
“Every patient of mine has come in with a major skincare mistake that I had to fix and I can’t help but wonder about the major things we all should have known or at the least been aware of at a younger age to make better choices when it came to our skin,” she wrote in her Instagram post.
The expert listed three things that one should focus on–cleanser, moisturiser, and sunblock.
Cleanser
It is important to keep the face clean and at the same time, it is equally important to maintain a healthy skin barrier. “Use a gentle cleanser that does not disrupt the skin barrier. Also, do not over-exfoliate or use harsh face washes. Gentle cleansing lotions are the best unless you are prone to getting acne,” she said.
According to dermatologist Dr Aanchal Panth’s previous post, people with dry or normal skin should exfoliate once a month while those with oily to combination skin should do it twice a month. “Don’t use peeling solutions in case of sensitive skin,” she warned.
Moisturiser
Moisturising with the right product that has the right ingredients helps repair and maintain the skin barrier. Dr Kiran advised keeping the skin barrier strong as it creates a protective layer on the skin. It is suggested to go through the ingredient list before making a purchase. A person with acne-prone skin should go for an oil-free and non-comedogenic moisturiser that contains tea tree oil or salicylic acid.
Sunblock
The importance of applying sunscreen can’t be emphasised enough, given the benefits it has on our skin. It should be applied every day regardless of weather, season, or if you are in sun or inside your house. “It is super important. I have been wearing sunscreen since I was 12 years old,” said Dr Kiran in her Instagram video.
Ideally, one should choose a mineral sunscreen over a chemical one as chemical sunscreens get absorbed into our blood while mineral or physical sunblock simply sits on the skin and act like a shield. People who have sensitive or acne-prone skin are advised to apply physical sunscreen instead of chemical. “Wear mineral sunscreen whether you are indoors or outdoors,” she added.
