International Yoga Day 2025 Date, Theme, History: Yoga is an ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice with roots in India, with the word being derived from the Sanskrit word meaning to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness.
Every year on June 21, International Yoga Day is commemorated to raise awareness about the multiple benefits of yoga and promote its holistic approach to health and well-being.
This year marks the 11th anniversary on June 21, 2025, which falls on a Saturday, under the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health” as designated by the United Nations.
The theme highlights the connection between personal well-being and planetary health, aligning with the Indian ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which holds that the world is one family.
The idea behind International Yoga Day came in September 2014, when India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, introduced the notion during his address to the United Nations General Assembly.
He highlighted the value of yoga as a comprehensive approach to health and well-being and proposed that June 21 be designated as International Yoga Day, which ultimately gained overwhelming support from UN member states, and the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 International Yoga Day in December 2014.
The significance of International Yoga Day lies in its ability to unite individuals with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and countries to celebrate and practise yoga.
International Yoga Day provides an opportunity for individuals and communities globally to come together and experience the transformative effects of yoga.
