Actor Hina Khan posted a statement on her Instagram about feeling upset after being overwhelmed by the news from Israel, just days after becoming a showstopper at Lakme Fashion Week. The actor stated that it was impacting her personally and that she needed a break to get back to being herself.
Taking to her Instagram Stories, Hina wrote, “All the content related to Israel/Palestine rolling on social media is so so distressing.. It affects me to an extent that I feel depressed, miserable, sad.. All the optimism just disappears. Humanity is completely lost somewhere.. It’s affecting me personally, I need a break. But we mustn’t stop praying.”
If you have also been feeling similarly, know you are not alone. This is a challenging time, with active war zones and mass killings taking place across the world, whether that is in Ukraine or Palestine. Coping with distressing news during this time can be challenging, according to Dr Mazher Ali, psychiatrist at CARE Hospitals.
But he emphasised that there are strategies you can employ to help maintain your mental and emotional well-being.
Consider reducing the amount of time you spend on social media and news websites. Limit your exposure to distressing news by setting specific times for checking updates and sticking to those limits.
Focus on reliable news sources that provide well-researched and balanced information. Avoid sensationalist or clickbait headlines that can amplify anxiety.
Discuss your feelings with friends and family. Sometimes, talking about distressing news can help you process your emotions and feel less isolated.
Balance the negative news with positive and uplifting content. Follow accounts or websites that share inspiring stories, humour, or educational material.
Engage in mindfulness and meditation techniques to stay grounded and reduce anxiety. This can help you manage your emotional reactions to distressing news.
Periodically take digital detox breaks. Disconnect from social media and news for a day or a weekend to recharge mentally and emotionally.
While this happens, some of us might also feel guilty for ignoring the news for your peace of mind, explained Dr Ali, but you have to understand your limits. “Acknowledge your own limits and the importance of self-care. You can’t help others if you’re overwhelmed,” he said.
Instead of feeling guilty for not consuming all the news, focus on taking meaningful actions that can contribute positively to the world. This might include volunteering, supporting a cause, or donating to a charity. You can even read some books on the Israel-Palestine conflict to educate yourself.
Remember that it’s natural to be affected by distressing news and world events, but taking steps to manage your exposure and cope with your emotions can help maintain your mental and emotional well-being.
