Leave it to social media to come up with fascinating (and sometimes bizarre) trends that engage people for days until the next big thing emerges. Following the ‘Roman Empire’ trend, where girls asked the men in their lives how often they thought about the Roman Empire (and were often surprised by the frequency), a fresh trend has emerged on TikTok. Now, girlfriends are showcasing the impact of relationships on their boyfriends.

Dubbed as ‘girlfriend effect’ or ‘girlfriend air,’ this trend suggests that, thanks to love and being in a relationship, boyfriends undergo a positive transformation. In case you’re not familiar, there was a previous meme called ‘boyfriend air’ suggesting that spending a lot of time with your boyfriend accentuates perceived flaws in your appearance. In contrast, the new trend emphasises that the more time you spend with your girlfriend, the more stylish you become.

With over 58 million views on TikTok, the trend has women showing off their boyfriends’ before and after photos. It aims to highlight how their partner’s appearance and style have undergone positive changes during the course of their relationship because girlfriends usually acquaint their partners with the latest styling advice and groom them to look their sartorial best.

Leah Degois, a content creator on the platform, shared how she “levelled up” her boyfriend’s style in a recent video. “I need to show you the transformation I did to this man. This man really thought he was serving looks…This is how he looked when we started talking. Don’t ask me what I saw. I mean, he has a great personality, a good heart, whatever. But I was like, ‘There is potential here but this is not it’,” she said, posting images of her boyfriend’s style before they started dating.

Next, she put images of him after they began dating and said, “The more I pushed him to play with his style a little bit, the more he actually enjoyed it himself…This outfit is such a slay, I literally love this one. And the olive tones look really nice on his skin tone, so that’s also so cute. He’s even playing with vintage jackets how cute is that? Going from this to this – that is the power of a woman.”

Several users also took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts about this newest trend which is gaining momentum on social media.

One user wrote, “The girlfriend effect is real because my bf has gotten 10x sexier since he met me and if that isn’t enough proof then idk what is.”

“The girlfriend effect is my favourite TikTok trend because we love seeing men finally know how to wear,” another user wrote.
