Given that most of us want quick results when it comes to our skin’s health and glow, many of us resort to DIY home remedies that can be whipped up in a few minutes. As such, when we came across an Instagram reel suggesting that aloe vera can be used for a dark neck along with baking soda, we wanted expert insights on whether it actually worked. But first, onto the so-called remedy.
Shalini from the skin and beauty page beauty__secrets_with_shalini shared how to make the remedy.
Ingredients
Aloe vera leaf
Baking soda
Sugar
Turmeric
Lemon juice (optional) if darkness is more, can use
Method
*First put a warm towel on the neck for 10 minutes.
*Scrub with this remedy for 15 minutes.
How often to do it?
According to the page, adults should do this process three times a week for the best results. But for children, only once.
Dr Navya Handa, dermatologist, cosmetologist, and laser surgeon, Primus Super Speciality Hospital mentioned that while the skincare hack contains ingredients that have some individual skincare benefits, it raises concerns about its “overall effectiveness and potential for adverse reactions”. “Baking soda, a key component in the scrub, is known for its exfoliating properties but can be abrasive, especially on sensitive skin. It has the potential to cause skin irritation and disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance. The use of lemon juice, particularly if the skin is exposed to sunlight, can increase the risk of photosensitivity and skin reactions,” said Dr Handa.
Furthermore, the recommended frequency of three times a week for this scrub might be excessive for many individuals, and over-exfoliation can lead to redness, dryness, and increased skin sensitivity.
“Additionally, the mixture is suggested for children but should be approached with caution, as children’s skin tends to be more sensitive,” said Dr Handa.
Before trying this skincare hack, it is advisable to conduct a patch test to check for any adverse reactions. “Given the potential for side effects and the variation in skin types and sensitivities, consulting a dermatologist for personalised skincare recommendations is a safer approach to address specific skin concerns without risking unintended reactions or harm,” said Dr Handa.
