Earthen pitchers or matkas make their yearly appearance in some households during summer. An age-old practice, many families store drinking water in matkas to keep it cool. While this water, which has an earthy taste, can quench thirst immediately, does it also help reduce “bad cholesterol, control blood pressure, and improve digestion”? Intrigued by a post from nutritionist Rashmi Mishra on Instagram that suggested so, we decided to delve deeper into the claim.
One of the most important benefits of matkas is their natural cooling properties. “Clay pots have a porous nature that allows water to evaporate from the surface, naturally cooling the water inside,” said Dt Reenu Dubey, consultant dietician, Motherhood Hospitals, Electronic City, Bangalore.
Does it aid digestion?
Drinking water at a moderate temperature, such as that provided by a matka, can aid in digestion, agreed Dubey. “Extremely cold water can tighten blood vessels and hinder digestion, while matka water, being mildly cool, is gentle on the digestive system and can help maintain a healthy digestive process,” said Dubey.
Moreover, matka water is believed to have a mildly alkaline nature, which may help balance the body’s pH levels, “reducing acidity and preventing conditions such as acid reflux and heartburn”. “This can also contribute to improved digestion,” said Dubey.
Drinking room temperature or mildly cool water can boost metabolism. “Cold water from the refrigerator can slow down the metabolic rate, whereas matka water helps maintain an optimal metabolic rate, helping in better nutrient absorption and overall energy levels,” shared Dubey.
Additionally, using an earthen pot instead of plastic or metal containers helps the environment, urged Dr Srikanth HS, senior naturopath, Jindal Naturecure Institute. “It lowers the amount of plastic trash produced and the carbon footprint resulting from the production and recycling of plastic bottles,” said Srikanth.
While there are benefits of drinking water from a matka, the idea that it can help reduce bad cholesterol and control blood pressure is “rooted in traditional beliefs”, said Dubey.
“There is limited scientific evidence directly supporting these claims. But the pleasant and refreshing taste of water from a clay pot promotes hydration and drinking adequate water is important for overall health, which can indirectly support cardiovascular health and have a mild effect on blood pressure regulation,” said Dubey.
Dr Srikanth added, “Since matka water is naturally filtered, it is thought to have antioxidant qualities. Antioxidants are essential to battle oxidative stress and lower the risk of chronic diseases”.
However, doctors urge that it is important to effectively manage cholesterol and blood pressure through sustainable lifestyle changes rather than relying on matka water. “It is crucial to follow a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and consult with doctors for advice and treatment,” said Dubey.
