Inside Diana Penty’s Byculla home with 100-year-old wooden cabinets: ‘I have heard that it’s come from a World War 2 ship’

"This is over 100 years old! This is still older than me. Main ek aise jagah pe aayi hoon jaha cheezein mere se bhi zyada puraani hai," Farah Khan joked about the wooden furniture in the house.

Want a peek inside a celebrity’s house? Head over to Farah Khan’s YouTube channel, where the filmmaker takes us straight inside our favourite Bollywood stars’ homes, giving us exclusive glimpses of the cosy corners they unwind in and the kitchens they cook up a storm in. In one of her recent episodes, Farah and her cook, Dilip, visited Diana Penty’s Byculla home—a century-old property that boasts of the Cocktail actor’s half-Parsi, half-Christian heritage.

Comparing the house to the lavish Buckingham Palace, Farah and Dilip made their way inside with awestruck faces, greeting Penty and her mother, Noreen, at the gate. “Mereko lag raha hai main ekdum peeche colonial ghar mein pohoch gayi hoon,” Farah told the hosts.

Living area

As soon as you enter the house, you are greeted with a huge arch-shaped doorway, flanked by two humongous fern planters. Walk a little ahead, and you can spot typical Parsi-style architecture —long, winding staircases, high ceilings painted white, and multiple doors. The first living room is swathed in shades of cream and ivory, juxtaposed with dark wooden accents and furniture, and awash in warm golden lights from antique lamps. The house’s colour palette is a mix of soft, muted neutrals and pastels. Vintage paintings hang on the walls, adding a rustic touch.

Pointing at one of the wooden cabinets in the room, Noreen told Farah that the wooden pieces are all over 100 years old. “This is over 100 years old! This is still older than me. Main ek aise jagah pe aayi hoon jaha cheezein mere se bhi zyada puraani hai (I have come to a such a place where things are older than me),” joked Farah, upon hearing her reply.

Kitchen

Making their way to the kitchen, Penty also revealed that she has a farm outside, and Farah added that the house doesn’t feel like it’s in the heart of Mumbai. The kitchen, like the rest of the rooms in the house, is large and spacious, with off-white cabinets and a large netted window near the ceiling. The dining table is attached right next to the kitchen counter—a heavy wooden piece with antique, traditional craftsmanship, surrounded by chairs with matching woodwork.

Second floor

The living area on the second floor is even more vast, with higher ceilings, similar wooden flooring, cream walls, and pastel-coloured furniture and ivory drapes, all highlighted by soft lighting. One of the room’s multiple doors opens onto a huge garden terrace. The corners of the room have cute planters that add a dash of green to the space. A circular spiral table sits at the centre of the room, which Penty shared was once gifted to her grandfather many decades ago. “I have heard that it’s come from a World War 2 ship,” added the Thamma actor.
