Youth arrested for raping minor girl in West Tripura: police

The accused allegedly threatened the girl not to tell anyone about the crime, said the Tripura Police.

The Tripura Police arrested a youth for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl in the West Tripura district, said the police Sunday. The police said the crime occurred on May 9 when the girl visited a neighbour’s house.

The police said the girl’s mother said the accused had threatened the minor, warning her not to tell anyone about the crime. Out of fear, the girl remained silent until May 17, when she confided in her mother after experiencing some physical problems, the police said.

“The girl’s mother complained on May 19 at the West Agartala women’s police station, following which we booked the accused and arrested him. The rape accused was produced before the court on Saturday,” said a police officer.

A week ago, six youths, among whom four were minors, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a minor girl in the South Tripura district.

Earlier, in March this year, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said during the budget session in the state Assembly that 231 women were murdered and 144 were raped in Tripura in 2023-24. Citing a home department report, Saha, who is also in charge of the home department, informed that 39 persons were arrested for the murders, but only six continue to remain incarcerated.

As many as 9,308 cases related to crimes against women were lodged in the northeastern state from 2023 till January this year. Aprobe was conducted in 8,485 cases, while investigation has not been completed in the remaining 823 cases.

Quoting National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, CM Saha also said Tripura witnessed a 19.3 per cent decline in the overall crime rate in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Tripura now has the third-lowest crime rate among all 28 states in the country.
