One of the few surviving World War veterans in the country, Subedar Thanseia passed away Sunday after a brief illness. He was 102. The distinguished veteran was from Mizoram and had been part of the Army’s Assam Regiment. He is well known for his valour at the Battle of Kohima during World War II and his role in establishing the legacy of the 1st Assam Regiment during their deployment at Jessami. Officials said throughout his service, Subedar Thanseia demonstrated a commitment to the nation that went beyond the call of duty, “earning him a revered place in the annals of India's military history.” They said his actions at Kohima, against formidable odds, contributed to a pivotal victory for the Allied forces, marking a turning point in the conflict in the East. After his retirement, he continued to participate in veteran affairs and educational initiatives.
