Weather News Highlights (Sunday, June 30): Torrential rains lashed several parts of North India with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next four to five days in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

A day earlier, Haridwar experienced heavy rainfall which led to flooding in the Sukhi river. Several cars were washed away, and rainwater gushed into homes, leaving major roads in the pilgrimage town waterlogged. The IMD has issued an ‘orange alert’ for the city, predicting heavy rainfall and a generally cloudy sky on Sunday and over the next three days.

While Delhi will experience moderate to heavy rains, with an ‘orange alert’ in place for the next three days, Himachal Pradesh will also witness heavy downpour and thunderstorms from June 30 to July 2. A little away from North India, West Bengal will also witness heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms on Sunday. A yellow alert has been issued for North Bengal, as well as North and South 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia districts. Fishermen along the coasts of North and South 24 Parganas have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea due to high waves till Sunday night.

Weather News Live Updates: Lightning kills two, injures seven in UP's Deonar

Two, including a temple priest, lost their lives in separate lightning strikes that occurred in Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. The incident also left seven others seriously injured.

According to the Kotwali police station SHO Ved Prakash Sharma, the first incident happened around 1 PM when heavy rains were lashing the area. Some people, including the temple priest Radheshyam Giri (50), had taken shelter in a temple in Goplapur village under the Kotwali police station when lightning struck the structure. The lightning was so powerful that it burned a hole in the roof of the temple, and those seeking refuge were hit.

Weather News Live Updates: IMD forecasts heavy rain in North Bengal, light showers in Kolkata tomorrow

The Met department has issued yellow alerts (heavy rain of 7-11cm) for Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts along with orange alerts (heavy to very heavy rain of 7-20 cm) for Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar in North Bengal. South Bengal is likely to experience light to moderate rain along with thunder.

A yellow alert has been issued for July 2 for the North Bengal regions of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar.

Weather News Live Updates: Heavy rain in Ahmedabad, waterlogged roads and flooded residential societies

It rained heavily in Ahmedabad city on Sunday afternoon. Science City and Gota were inundated as these two areas in the northwest zones recorded the highest rainfall, 163 mm and 162.5 mm respectively, leading to waterlogged roads and underpasses as well as flooded residential societies.

Vehicles were seen struggling including on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway around the Vaishno Devi circle and Nirma University. There were huge queues of vehicles waiting on the Vaishno Devi flyover and the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway. Roads near Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport were also flooded. Read more.

Weather News Live Updates: Civic authorities on high alert for waterlogging, IMD forecasting heavy rainfall in Delhi.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “orange alert” for Delhi until July 2, indicating the likelihood of heavy showers. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has increased manpower deployment and is closely monitoring vulnerable areas using CCTV cameras. Superintending engineers are overseeing operations to ensure timely interventions.

The NDMC has deployed additional pumps and super suction machines to combat waterlogging in areas like Golf Links and Bharti Nagar. Staff members’ leaves have been canceled, and each vulnerable area is assigned to a superintending engineer. The central command and control room continuously monitors these areas through CCTV cameras.

Delhi weather: Temperatures climb to near normal, heavy rain likely until July 2

A generally cloudy sky with heavy rain is expected in Delhi on Sunday, according to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) seven-day forecast.

The capital saw very light, scattered rain on Saturday, but the Capital remained on an orange alert until Tuesday.

In its advisory during the orange alert period, the IMD has asked people to check for traffic congestion, avoid waterlogged areas, and stay away from power lines or electrical wires. It has also advised people to stay indoors and avoid travel in its impact-based Delhi-NCR forecast.

Downpour in north, IMD warns of heavy rain for next 5 days

The number of people killed in rain-related incidents in Delhi rose to 11 after bodies of three labourers were pulled from the rubble of a wall that collapsed at a construction site in the Vasant Vihar area in New Delhi amid heavy rain on Friday.

For the next seven days, Delhi will experience moderate to heavy rain, and an ‘orange alert’ has been issued for the next three days, the IMD said.

Why India needs to build disaster resilience in its critical infrastructure

While early warnings and quick response have significantly reduced human casualties in disasters, economic and other losses from extreme weather events and disasters have been rising. This is mainly due to the increase in frequency and intensity of such events. Government data show that in the five years between 2018 and 2023, states together spent more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore on dealing with the aftermath of disasters and natural calamities.

Making critical infrastructure resilient to extreme events and disasters is, thus, a crucial component of climate change adaptation.
