Over 100 people were killed and 128 injured in a series of deadly landslides that hit Kerala’s Wayanad district in the early hours of Tuesday. While the rescue operations are underway, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared a two-day state mourning for the loss of lives in the calamity. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who represented the Wayanad constituency in the 17th Lok Sabha, will visit the region on Wednesday.
Here’s what we know so far:
📌 The hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district were hit by a series of massive landslides, triggered by the heavy rains.
📌 The landslides claimed the lives of more than 100 people and left 128 people injured with several others still missing, said CM Pinarayi Vijayan.
📌 The initial landslide occurred around 2 am, followed by one around 4.30 am, resulting in hundreds being trapped under the debris.
📌 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a red alert for the high-range Wayanad district and neighbouring Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts, indicating extremely heavy rainfall. IMD issued an orange alert for Tuesday for all other districts of the state, except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.
📌 Following the disaster, the Kerala government declared a two-day state mourning.
📌 The Defence Security Corps deployed 200 soldiers and a medical team to assist with the rescue operations. Additionally, two helicopters from the Air Force Station in Sulur were dispatched to aid in the efforts.
📌 More than 300 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, fire brigade, citizen safety, police and local emergency response teams were deployed for the search-and-rescue operations.
📌 Trained army dogs from the canine breeds of Belgian Malinois, Labradors, and German Shepherds, which are capable of smelling human remains and the faintest of breath under mud will be deployed at the landslide site.
📌 The chief minister said that 45 camps have been set up in Wayanad, with more than 3000 people being rehabilitated. Across the entire state, a total of 118 camps are providing shelter to 5,531 individuals.
📌 A special control room has been set up at the Thiruvananthapuram police headquarters by the government to coordinate activities and issue instructions to search teams in the affected area.
📌 Temporary hospitals are being set up and medical teams from Kozhikode, Kannur, and Thrissur Medical Colleges have been sent to Wayanad, along with additional doctors and nurses in critical departments said the state government.
📌 Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
