Calling it better than his own, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday praised his sister Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi’s maiden speech in the Lok Sabha.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Rahul Gandhi said, “Wonderful speech… Better than my maiden speech, let us put it like that.” In her address, the Congress leader criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of being unmoved by the violence in Sambhal and Manipur. She also said the Modi government had forgotten that the Samvidhan (Constitution) is not the Sangh ka Vidhan (law of the Sangh). Responding to criticism of her party and family regarding the Emergency, the Wayanad MP urged the government to learn from it and apologise for its mistakes.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also lauded Priyanka Gandhi’s speech, saying, “I think it was an excellent maiden speech. She did not speak like a first-time Parliamentarian. She spoke with tremendous maturity, grace, and intelligence. I was very impressed. She also made all the important points. Since Rajnath Singh gave a very strong speech attacking Congress’ history, she rightly pointed out, ‘When will they talk about today?'”
