Another casualty in rain-ravaged Uttarakhand — bridge connecting border villages of Niti Valley

Uttarkashi flood news update: In the last 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department, Uttarakhand’s plain districts of Dehradun and Haridwar received rainfall of 68.4 mm and 125.3 mm, respectively, far exceeding the normal for this time of the year.

Uttarakhand rains: Multiple highways have been washed away in Uttarakhand following heavy rain and the swelling of seasonal streams. The Joshimath-Malari road was swept away, cutting off several villages in Chamoli, early on Sunday.

According to officials, the Tamak stream rose after rainfall, causing damage to the bridge. Traffic on several roads, including the Haldwani-Sitarganj state highway and multiple points on the Gangotri and Yamunotri highways, has also been obstructed because of heavy water flow.

In the last 24 hours, according to data from the India Meteorological Department, the plain districts of Dehradun and Haridwar received rainfall of 68.4 mm and 125.3 mm, respectively, far exceeding the normal for this time of the year. The hill districts of Tehri and Pauri Garhwal have also received rainfall of over 45 mm. In the Mori block of Uttarkashi, 45 mm of rainfall was recorded.

An orange alert has been issued for Sunday in the districts of Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar. For Monday, an orange alert has been issued for most districts of the state. Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and a very intense to extremely intense spell of rain are likely at isolated places in Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar, the forecast for Sunday says.

Several rivers are in spate, with the Alaknanda at 627.55 m, a little above the danger level; the Mandakini at 625.9 m, above its warning level of 625 m but below the danger level of 626 m.

Meanwhile, after roads were swept away and access to villages was completely disrupted, a medical team assisted in the childbirth of a 21-year-old woman at her home in Baksir village of the Jakholi block in Rudraprayag late on Saturday night. The health department team remains in touch with the woman’s family to ensure no further complications arise, officials said.
