A 55-year-old woman was crushed to death allegedly by a police vehicle on patrol duty when she was sleeping outside her house in the Chilla area of Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district on Wednesday night.
The woman, identified as Rajni Devi, died on the spot and the angry locals damaged the vehicle involved in the accident. The occupants of the vehicle — three constables — fled from the spot, it is learnt.
The residents alleged that liquor bottles were found in the vehicle and that the police personnel were drunk.
An inquiry has been initiated into the incident, senior officials said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankur Agarwal said a medical examination was conducted on the three policemen and it was found that they were not intoxicated. The liquor bottles recovered from the vehicle were empty, he added.
The police suspect that some people planted the bottles in the vehicle.
On the complaint of the woman’s son, an FIR on charges of causing death by negligence was registered against a constable-cum-driver at the Chilla police station on Thursday.
The three constables have been attached to the police reserve lines.
The police said the driver lost control of the vehicle when Rajni Devi was sleeping outside her house, located a few hundreds metres from the local police station.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Laxmi Nivas Mishra said the Circle Officer (CO) concerned has been directed to conduct a “detailed inquiry” into the matter.
