The Centre on Friday launched the Unified Portal for Agricultural Statistics (UPAg), an online platform for management of agricultural data.
The UPAg, developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (DA & FW), was launched by NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand. He described it as an investment and a “giant step” in the realm of agriculture data management.
On this occasion, Agriculture Secretary Manoj Ahuja said that the UPAg Portal was being envisaged as a public good wherein users will benefit by reduced search costs and frictions and access to credible, granular and objective data. He also highlighted the other initiatives currently being undertaken by the ministry like Krishi Decision Support System, farmer registry, and crop survey.
Sr Economic and Statistical Adviser Arun Kumar informed about major initiatives currently being undertaken at the ministry to enhance data accuracy and improve digital data governance in agriculture. Adviser DA&FW Ruchika Gupta shared the salient features of the UPAg Portal.
The platform is designed to generate crop estimates and integrate with other systems generating agriculture statistics such as price, trade, procurement, stock, said an official.
In a statement, the Agriculture Ministry said the UPAg portal will address various challenges including lack of standardised data, lack of verified data, dispersed data etc.
“It aims to provide real-time, standardised, and verified data on agricultural commodities, facilitating data-driven decision-making for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders. This initiative aligns with the principles of e-governance, bringing smartness, transparency, and agility to India’s agriculture sector,” the statement said.
