Two Bangladeshi citizens—a man and a woman— were arrested at the Agartala railway station on Wednesday for allegedly entering Tripura without valid documents.

“We booked a case and charged them under different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the IPP Act and the Foreigners Act. We forwarded them to court today,” Tapas Das, officer in charge of the Government Railway Police (GRP) station in Agartala, said on Thursday.

The duo—Amit Dhar, a resident of Chattogram; and Mili Akhter, a resident of Dhaka—were arrested during a joint operation involving the GRP, Railway Protection Force, Border Security Force and other agencies.

Much of Tripura’s 856-km border with Bangladesh—comprising land and riverine sections—is secured with barbed-wire fencing, but a few patches remain unfenced owing to local disputes.

Human trafficking, drug trafficking and the smuggling of arms, cattle and other livestock are among the major trans-border crimes in the region. Bangladeshis and Rohingya as well as Indians have recently been arrested with cannabis, synthetic drugs and firearms in various parts of Tripura.
