Tripura man injured after aunt throws acid on him ‘mistaking him for thief’

Each side has got a case booked against the other in connection with the incident in North Tripura district.

A 27-year-old man sustained severe burns after his aunt allegedly threw acid on him suspecting him to be a thief at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district.

The injured man, identified as Sushanta Debnath, is a resident of Anandabazar in Dharmanagar.

While speaking to reporters, Sushanta said the incident happened on the night of May 27, when he entered the house of his maternal uncle, who is also his neighbour, after hearing some sound.

“I heard some noise and went there but saw nothing. My maternal uncle asked whether I had come to steal anything. My aunt threw acid at me. My younger brother later took me to the district hospital, from where I was referred to GBP Hospital (Agartala),” he said.

Police said two cases had been registered in connection with the incident–one against Sushanta’s uncle Jitendra Nath and aunt Kajali Nath and the other against him for entering their house late at night.

“We are inquiring into the matter. We will take action based on evidence,” an officer of the Dharmanagar police station said on Wednesday.
