The ruling BJP on Saturday conducted a statewide agitation in different parts of Tripura, including the capital city, opposing CPI(M)’s claim of poor governance of the state government.

“We have seen that the oppositions are misguiding people by accusing the government in different ways. Protesting against this, we hit the streets today (Saturday). They (CPIM) are talking about the food and petrol crisis and many other problems of the people. We want to assure that the state government headed by our chief minister is rendering services to poor people through different schemes. We appeal to the people not to pay attention to these things,” said BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharya amidst the protest rally organised in the capital city of Agartala.

Bhattacharya said the state has no fuel crisis but added that the supply was affected due to a natural calamity in Assam. “The crisis was solved through the state government’s rationing system and Centre’s intervention, leading to the arrival of fuel in the state,” he added.

When asked about BJP’s prospects in the Lok Sabha polls, he said that the entire country has no thoughts except Narendra Modi and added that they are working in the direction of making Modi the Prime Minister for the third time.

He said that the BJP stressed on maintaining law and order and a corruption-free administration. “You know that the TIPRA Motha has also joined us. The tribals also believe that there is no alternative to Modi. Our government is working to expand the services everywhere,” said Bhattacharya.

He added that the Centre had announced Dhalai district, mostly inhabited by tribals, as an aspirational district and announced a financial package.

“Our government has taken initiatives for the development of the tribal areas in different sectors, like, power and water. It has also set up 28 Eklavya schools. What can be a better achievement than this? In 25 years, both the CPI(M) and the Congress used the tribals as their vote bank and deprived them of development. Our CM has said that unless the tribals are developed, the state will not develop. We are working in this direction,” he said.

Earlier on May 11, the opposition CPI(M) announced to launch a weeklong statewide protest in demand of various pro-people issues, including provision of work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and the Tripura Urban Employment Program (TUEP), clearing pending wages of the workers among others from May 13.

Alleging severe scarcity of food and work in different rural areas, especially in areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) like Chowmanu RD block, Ganganagar RD block, Raimavalley RD block, Raishyabari, Dasda, Jampui Hills, Damcherra etc in Dhalai, North Tripura districts and the South Tripura districts since the last four to five years, the CPI(M) had alleged that the state government had miserably failed to provide a decent livelihood to the people.
