Two days after the Centre signed a tripartite accord with the Tripura government and Opposition Tipra Motha, CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhary on Monday termed the accord an ‘election lollipop’.
Speaking to reporters in Agartala, Chaudhury said, “They (the parties to the tripartite accord) said it’s an accord. As such, it’s not an accord. After several hours of discussion and brainstorming sessions, they have arrived at an understanding that issues related to political, economic, cultural, and land rights would be resolved amicably in a time-bound manner… The time has not been specified, the rights have not been explained…”
He said several accords were signed in the past but the issue has remained unresolved.
Citing a similar accord signed in 2017 with the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), which is now a partner in the BJP-led state government, Chaudhury said, “I don’t blame our Tiprasa (tribals) brethren. After this accord was signed, they celebrated. But it’s not the time… In 2017, a similar agreement was signed after 10 days of blockade. It (the accord) died out.”
Chaudhury also criticised a clause in the latest accord that prohibits signatories from holding any agitation till the process of resolving issues mentioned in the accord is underway.
