Tension erupted at a higher secondary school in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Friday after a group of “outsiders” allegedly attacked a Class 10 student from the minority community for objecting to their opposition against girls wearing hijabs in school.
Assistant Inspector General (Law & Order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury said security forces were deployed to bring the situation under control. The victim filed a complaint but no case was registered yet.
Some students said the issue started when outsiders came and objected to minority girls in hijabs. When 16-year-old student Iliyas Sarkar Suman protested, he was assaulted by the group.
His mother alleged that while he was attacked, the headmaster and teachers were absent. Minority groups reached the school to protest, escalating tensions until police arrived.
School headmaster Priyatosh Nandi said former students associated with VHP had visited last week, requesting a hijab ban citing uniform rules. While he asked students not to wear hijabs in class, he was unaware of official instructions on it.
As tensions grew, large security contingents were dispatched to maintain control, and classes were suspended. Senior VHP leaders were not available for comment.
