As the southwest monsoon advances, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said Kerala, which welcomed the season, is likely to receive very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall today. According to the latest radar imagery, a moderate to intense spell of rainfall and gusty wind speeds reaching 60 km/h are expected in Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts. Red and orange alerts have been sounded across other southern states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for the next two days.

Monsoon arrives in Kerala, earliest onset since 2009: IMD declared the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala on Saturday, eight days ahead of its normal schedule of June 1. This is the earliest since 2009, when monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 23. Normally, the southwest monsoon makes its onset over Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8. It starts retreating from northwest India around September 17 and withdraws completely by October 15. Data available since 1975 showed that monsoon reached Kerala the earliest in 1990 (on May 19).
