KERALA POLICE on Wednesday released photographs of 210 people suspected to have been involved in the violent incidents reported at Sabarimala and nearby areas during the protest against women’s entry to the shrine last week.
The six-day protest by Sabarimala Action Committee and various Hindu organisations turned violent several times, leading to the assault on mediapersons and causing damage to dozens of vehicles. Protesters also intimidated women who dared to attempt going to the hill shrine.
DGP Loknath Behera said special teams would be formed in all districts to identify the suspects whose photographs were released on Wednesday. The photographs of the suspects have been circulated in all districts as part of the investigation. They would face non-bailable offence if involved in damaging public property, the DGP said.
Police sources in Pathanamthitta district said more than 100 cases have been registered in connection with the violence at Nilakkal, Pamba and Sabarimala. The agitators would face non-bailable offence for causing damage to public property and attacking women, including scribes. The visuals of the assailants were collected during the protest itself, sources said.
Meanwhile, a high-level meeting of police officials held on Wednesday decided to deploy 5,000 police personal at Sabarimala and nearby base stations during the upcoming festival season starting next month. The flow of pilgrims to the shrine would be regulated at base camps also.
Chief Minster Pinarayi Vijayan said online queue system would be introduced for the pilgrims. None would be allowed to camp at the temple premises with an intention to create trouble, he said.
