RS seat for Chandigarh, Sanskrit in schools: 34 pvt Bills moved in LS

From a Bill to regulate the functioning and exercising of intelligence agencies’ power within and beyond the country, to a Bill for teaching Sanskrit as a compulsory language in schools, 34 private members’ Bills were introduced to the Lok Sabha on Friday.

Congress MP Manish Tewari introduced Intelligence Services (Powers and Regulation) Bill 2024, which also seeks coordination, control and oversight of national intelligence agencies, along with the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024 (Amendment of Article 80, Amendment of Article 324, etc). The Bill seeks to provide a Rajya Sabha seat for the UT of Chandigarh.

As Hibi Eden of the Congress moved three Bills, including the amendment of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, a private member’s Bill seeking the same was moved by N K Premachandran of Revolutionary Socialist Party. Premachandran sought to amend Section 3 and Schedule II of the Act, while moving two more Bills for ASHA and Anganwadi workers.

BJP’s Smit Uday Singh, who represents the Jalgaon constituency, introduced two Bills namely the Compulsory Teaching of Sanskrit Language in School Bill, and the National Youth Commission Bill; party’s Rajkumar Chahar introduced the Promotion of Organic Farming Bill. Another from the saffron party, Janardan Singh ‘Sigriwal’, introduced three Bills including the Play Schools (Regulation) Bill, and the Rural Labour Welfare Fund Bill.

Three more Bills — including the Compulsory Military Training in Schools, and Other Educational Institutions Bill 2024 — were introduced by Shiv Sena’s Shrirang Appa Barne, MP from Maval. This Bill focuses on compulsory military training in schools and other educational institutions to promote discipline, physical fitness, national unity, and preparedness among youths.

IUML’s K Navaskani introduced three Bills — the Backward Areas Development Board Bill 2024, Ban on Entrance Examination in Professional Courses Bill 2024, and Overseas Workers (Welfare) Bill 2024.

The Lok Sabha also discussed the Commission for Regulation and Development of Information Technology Industry Bill — piloted by DMK’s C N Annadurai. The discussion, however, remained inconclusive.
