The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Development Alternatives (DA) held the 9th meeting of the International Resource Panel (IRP) from November 19-22 in New Delhi.
The theme of the conference was ‘Resource Efficiency and Green Transformation’. IRP,which was set up by UNEP in 2007 to provide a holistic approach on resource management and to identify gaps and links in the use of materials and resources in a systemic way,met in national capital to review the work that has been undertaken and deliberated on the strategy of the panel for the next few years.
Members of the panel and the steering committee,consisting of governments,UNEP and civil society representatives,which govern it,participated in a workshop held on the themes of decoupling of resource use from the growth of cities,impacts of clean technology,recycling opportunities,management of metal resources and depletion of land and soil resources.
Addressing the media,co-chairs of the IRP,Ashok Khosla and Ernst U von Weizsacker,shared critical findings from the IRP assessments. The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests,represented by a senior spokesperson also shared the efforts towards resource efficiency in the Indian context.
