Six cops were injured when a clash broke out between protesters and police during a demonstration in Nowhatta locality here following which 73 people were arrested.
The clash took place last night during a demonstration when hundreds of youth started pelting stones at Nowhatta Police Station, police said.
“Seventy-three protesters were arrested and 10 motorbikes were seized during clashes which lasted for about five hours,” they said.
The youth had come from different places of Srinagar city riding motorcycles and gathered around the Jamia Masjid, police said.
When asked about the reason behind the attack on the police station, they said the recent spate of arrests in Nowhatta area and other adjoining areas of the city over the past four weeks led to the incident.
The demonstration was held as thousands held night-long prayers at mosques across Kashmir to observe Laylatul-Qadr (The Night of Power).
The intervening night of 26th and 27th of Ramadhan,or the Laylatul-Qadr,is believed to be when the first verses of Quran were revealed on Prophet Muhammad – 1445 years ago.
According to eye-witnesses,the protests flared when reports of arrest of youth from around Jamia Masjid spread inside the mosque.
Hundreds took to streets and pelted stones on the police which retaliated with tear-smoke cannisters and chilli grenades, they said.
