In view of the spate of violent incidents targeting doctors in Uttarakhand, the state government today told the state Assembly that no decision has yet been taken about making a law providing protection to the medical fraternity.

The government said it would take a decision after studying various aspects of the issue.

Replying to an adjournment motion raised by Dr Shailendra Mohan Singhal (Cong),Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prakash Pant said the government is committed to providing safety to doctors and other paramedical staff and is studying various aspects of Violence Against Medical Personnel and Damage to Property Act,already in force in 11 states of the country.

Regarding reports of vandalism by relatives of patients from various hospitals of the state,Pant said tough laws are already in place and whenever such incidents occur, the local administration is asked to take stern action against the offenders.

Earlier, raising the issue,Singhal said doctors went on a strike on Mar 14 over the demand of enacting a safety law for them but the government has failed to do anything on this front.

Supporting Singhal,Dinesh Agrawal (Cong) said if the government does not take any step for restoring the confidence of doctors, the situation of medical services would further worsen in the state.
