Half a dozen injured in stone-pelting clash

Half a dozen people including policemen were injured as police fired teargas shells.

Half a dozen people including policemen were injured as police fired teargas shells and also few warning shots in the air,to disperse an unruly mob which indulged in stone pelting in the town this afternoon.

According to sources,trouble erupted when a group of people,soon after Friday prayers at the local mosque this afternoon,went to the bazaar to make people down their shutters,so as to express their solidarity with the people of Kashmir. However,being less in numbers they could not get the desired response and later on returned to the mosque to ask others to join them.

After sometime,when they again tried to go to the bazaar to force closure of shops,they were stopped by a strong contingent of police headed by Station House Officer of Banihal Police Station,Sajjad Ahmed Mir.

As the mob resisted and started pelting stones,police lobbed teargas shells and even fired warning shots in the air to disperse the stone pelters.

Nearly half a dozen people including SHO Banihal and three other policemen were injured. Identifying one of the injured civilian as Sattar Naik,60,sources said that 12 people have been arrested by the police so far.

The clash between stone pelters and the police continued for nearly half an hour and all the shops and other business establishments got closed. According to sources,the situation was tense but under control.

Deputy Commissioner Ramban,K B Magotra,said that all precautionary measures have been taken. Additional Deputy Commissioner and SSP Ramban also visited the affected town to take stock of the situation.
