Geelani slams Farooq for favouring cinema halls, liquor shops

Kashmir is a place of saints and there is no place for liquor shops and cinema halls: Hurriyat.

Hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and an independent MLA today slammed Union Minister Farooq Abdullah for advocating reopening of cinema halls and liquor shops in Kashmir, saying there was no place for such “immoral things” in the Valley.

“Kashmir is a place of saints and there is no place for liquor shops and cinema halls here,” Hurriyat Conference said in a statement after a meeting of the amalgam’s Advisory Council.

The separatist amalgam said the meeting criticised Abdullah, who also heads the National Conference, for advocating reopening of these “immoral” places in Kashmir.

Abdullah had yesterday said that cinemas and liquor shops should reopen in Kashmir to give more options to tourists visiting the state.

“When we can have television at home, when we can watch pirated films at our homes what is wrong with cinemas then? Are not these functioning in Pakistan where there is so much fervour about Islam,” Abdullah had said.

Independent MLA from Langate Shiekh Abdul Rashid also attacked Abdullah for his statement, which he termed as “unwanted and illogical”.

He said the NC chief has hurt the sentiments of the people in Kashmir and added that tourists do not come to Kashmir to drink liquor and visit cinemas halls. “They come to enjoy the natural beauty of this place,” he added.
