In his first visit abroad as Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi will travel to the US on a week-long trip in the first week of September during which he will address the Indian diaspora, hold interaction with students in at least two prestigious universities and meet with US lawmakers.
Gandhi is likely to leave India on September 7 and will be in the US till September 14-15, sources said. He will be visiting multiple cities in the US. He will have engagements in Washington DC, New Jersey, Los Angeles and Texas. He is likely to have interactions with students of the University of Texas at Austin, and Howard University in Washington DC.
“In every city, we will have a diaspora event and one meeting with business leaders… and a dinner organised by the Indian Overseas Congress. In Washington DC, we don’t have a diaspora event…we will have meetings with lawmakers…from both Republican and Democratic parties….,” a Congress leader said.
US Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris is an alumni of Howard University. Sources said Sam Pitroda, who is back as head of Indian Overseas Congress, is coordinating meetings with lawmakers in Washington DC. “There is a lot of interest in the US on Indian politics post elections,” a Congress leader said. Rahul had last visited the US in May last year.
