The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) staged a protest inside the Kot Bhai police station in Gidderbaha, Muktsar district on Monday. The group’s chief and Gidderbaha MLA Amarinder Raja Warring claims that fake FIRs were lodged against its workers.

Warring claims that the police filed four “fake” FIRs against his party workers under the Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in the past five months. The latest FIR, which Warring claims is fake, was lodged on August 27 against Gur Avtar Singh, Darshan Singh, Malkiat Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Pala of Madhir Village under the same Act. The accused are currently absconding.

“Gur Avtar has been booked thrice under the same Act at the behest of SAD leaders. Rather than focusing on development, SAD leaders are more focused on getting FIRs lodged,” Warring said.

The protest inside the police station affected police work. It was only in the evening when an inquiry was marked in the matter that the protesters left the station. “We received a complaint from one Baljinder Singh of village Chattiana village on August 23 and we gave ample time to the persons to present their version. On August 27, an FIR was lodged against the five accused. We have marked yet another inquiry in this case,” said Jaswinder Singh, Station house officer (SHO), Kot Bhai police station. Baljinder had complained that the accused had beaten him and threw casteist remarks at him. Other FIRs, lodged on April 23, June 18 and May 5, were regarding charges under the Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and eve teasing.
