(Video screengrab/ Sansad TV)A little over 15% of the beneficiaries, who have got houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) so far, come from religious minority communities, according to a reply by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to a question in the Rajya Sabha Monday.
Replying to a question by nominated MP Satnam Singh Sandhu, Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry MoS Tokhan Sahu said 118.64 lakh houses had been sanctioned under PMAY-U, which was launched in 2015, based on proposals submitted by states and UTs as of July 15. Of them, 85.04 lakh houses had been completed or delivered to the beneficiaries.
Of the total sanctioned houses, 15.15% or 16 lakh houses were for beneficiaries from the minority communities. Of them, 13.45 lakh (12.74%) were Muslim beneficiaries, 1.73 lakh (1.64%) Christians, 49,670 (0.47%) Sikh, 19,707 (0.19%) Buddhist, 10,457 (0.10%) Jains and 1,127 (0.01%) Zoroastrians, the reply said.
The scheme had been extended from 2022 to December 31, 2024 to allow for completion of houses sanctioned till March 31, 2022.
In reply to another question on PMAY-U by Congress MP Ajay Maken, the MoS said: “…States/UTs have been advised to accelerate the pace of construction and ensure completion of sanctioned houses/projects within the stipulated timelines as per Detailed Project Report. The Ministry conducts regular meetings to monitor progress of the scheme and completion of houses approved under the scheme,” the written reply stated.
The average cost of a single house under the scheme in 2023-2024 ranged between Rs 2.71 lakh in Tripura and Rs 7.25 lakh in Puducherry, as per another reply by the MoS to a question by Kerala MP Abdul Wahab.
