Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran industrialist Ratan Tata, who passed away at the age of 86 in Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital late on Wednesday night.
In his message of condolence, PM Modi described Tata as a “visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being.”
“Shri Ratan Tata Ji provided stable leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses,” PM Modi said, adding that Tata’s influence extended far beyond the corporate world. “He endeared himself to several people thanks to his humility, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to making our society better.”

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran confirmed the news, calling Tata his “friend, mentor, and guide.”
Tata, the chairman emeritus of the Tata Group, had been hospitalised at Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai for the past few days, according to reports from a senior police official, PTI reported.
Ratan Tata, the renowned Indian industrialist and philanthropist, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86 after battling a prolonged illness. He had been in critical condition and under intensive care at a Mumbai hospital. Just two days prior, Tata had mentioned undergoing routine medical checks due to his age and related health conditions .
Tata’s remarkable legacy includes leading the Tata Group as chairman from 1991 to 2012 and serving as interim chairman from 2016 to 2017. Under his visionary leadership, the group expanded globally, acquiring notable companies like Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus .
A highly respected figure, Tata received the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, India’s second-highest civilian honor, following the Padma Bhushan in 2000. His contributions to education, medicine, and rural development have made a lasting impact.
