Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday amidst heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, with both leaders discussing the importance of peace in West Asia. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. President Pezeshkian highlighted India’s potential role in de-escalating the conflict due to its good relations with all involved parties.
The two leaders focused on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Modi described the meeting as productive, noting they reviewed bilateral relations and explored ways to deepen ties, particularly in future-oriented sectors.
This was the first meeting between Modi and Pezeshkian since the Iranian leader took office in July, following snap elections after the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri termed the discussion “fruitful,” adding that Prime Minister Modi expressed deep concern about the escalating conflict in West Asia, calling for the protection of civilians and advocating dialogue to ease tensions.
“Both leaders (PM Modi and Iranian President Pezeshkian) also discussed the situation in West Asia. PM Modi expressed his deep concern over the escalating conflict and reiterated India’s call for the protection of civilians and prevention of harm to civilians. He emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions,” Misri said.
Pezeshkian also emphasised the importance of peace in the region and acknowledged India’s influence in calming the situation. Modi congratulated Pezeshkian on his recent election victory and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Iran, welcoming Iran’s inclusion in BRICS.
Both leaders highlighted the importance of the Chabahar Port and the INSTC for enhancing regional connectivity and trade, especially concerning Afghanistan’s reconstruction and trade with Central Asia. They also discussed the situation in Afghanistan, stressing the need for stability and continued humanitarian aid.
President Pezeshkian praised India’s support in Iran’s accession to international organisations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS. Modi extended an invitation for Pezeshkian to visit India, which was accepted.
The meeting occurred against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and Israel-Hezbollah conflict, which has seen rising tensions. Israel is also preparing for retaliation against Iran following a missile attack earlier in the month. India continues to express concern over the volatile situation in West Asia, urging a return to dialogue and diplomacy for lasting peace and stability.
