Opposition Meeting in Patna Highlights (June 23): Following the first meeting of the Opposition parties to forge a common front against the ruling BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Patna today, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, while addressing a press meet, said that all the leaders have agreed to fight unitedly against current regime in the Centre. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge further informed that the next meet in Shimla will finalise the modalities of the front. This comes despite differences between AAP and the Congress during the meeting, where the former made it clear that it would be “very difficult” for it to be part of an alliance until the Grand Old Party denounced the Centre’s ordinance in Delhi.

Reacting to the meet, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah calling it a “photo session” and saying that the various Opposition parties can never be united. BJP MP Sushil Modi said, “This is a ‘Gathbandhan of Thugs’. They are preparing to fool the country. They have no principle, or policy and all are involved in corruption”.

Kejriwal carries AAP agenda to Oppn meeting: ‘Will be very hard to be part of coalition with Cong’

In an escalation of tension between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress in the midst of the Opposition parties’ first joint meeting in Patna Friday, the AAP signalled a further deterioration in its strained ties with the Congress, saying that unless the latter publicly denounces the ordinance promulgated by the Centre it would be “very difficult” for it to be a part of any alliance that includes the grand old party.

The BJP-led Centre’s Delhi ordinance takes control of administrative services from the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government in the national capital.

The standoff between the AAP and the Congress played out during and after the meeting of the 15 Opposition parties at Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar’s residence in Patna, which was convened to work out their common roadmap for taking on the Narendra Modi-led BJP dispensation in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Patna Oppn meeting off to a good start, parties resolve to contest together, set date for next talks

It was as good as they could have hoped for. The top leaders of as many as 15 Opposition parties held their much-anticipated Patna meeting on Friday and, after deliberations lasting over four hours, announced that they would fight the 2024 Lok Sabha elections together.

As parties had indicated earlier, they did not get into the nitty gritty of seat-sharing or electoral adjustments at this first meeting, leaving the tricky issues for later talks. They also announced the venue for the next meeting: Shimla in Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh, on either July 10 or 12.

Multi-headed selfish alliance, like pack of wolves whose prey is India's future: BJP

As 17 opposition parties came together on Friday to stitch a front against the BJP, the ruling party called it a "multi-headed selfish alliance" and compared it with wolves hunting in packs.

Addressing a press conference here soon after the opposition unity meeting in Patna, BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani said this coming together of the parties was not targeted at Prime Minister Narendra Modi but the country's coffers.

"It is said that wolves hunt in packs! A political pack met in Patna. Their 'prey' is the future of India," she said. She said this alliance of selfishness was being forged with India as its target. "Whenever these political parties came together, they brought corruption, nepotism and brought with them the allegation of constricting the economic progress of the nation," Irani added.

There will be no polls in future if this 'dictatorial' govt returns: Mamata Banerjee

There will be no more elections in future if this "dictatorial" government returns, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee warned on Friday while asserting that leaders of all non-BJP parties have decided to unitedly fight the saffron party in 2024.

"If this dictatorial government returns this time, there will be no elections in future," she said at a press conference. "We are united, we will fight unitedly. Do not call us the opposition, we are patriotic and we love 'Bharat Mata'. We also feel the pain when Manipur burns. The BJP is running a government dictatorially," Banerjee asserted.

The TMC supremo said the first meeting of opposition leaders was organised in Patna as "whatever starts from Patna, takes the shape of the public movement". "We resolve that we all are united and will fight unitedly against the BJP," she said and added that "the BJP wants to change history, but we will ensure history is saved".

Opposition meeting is aimed at saving dynasties: Fadnavis

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said the Opposition parties were meeting in Patna not to dislodge Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government but to save their own political dynasties.

He also took a swipe at his former ally and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray who had in the past criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party for joining hands with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir.

“They have said the meeting is for `Modi Hatao' (remove Modi), but they are working to protect their dynasties. Uddhav Thackeray used to criticize us for joining hands with (PDP leader) Mehbooba Mufti in Kashmir. Now he is sitting next to Mehbooba Mufti and talking about forming an alliance,” he said.

The Opposition has realised that the country will stand by Modi for the work done by him, Fadnavis said, adding that the Opposition made a futile attempt in 2019 (to come together against the BJP) and the people will give a bigger mandate to the BJP in 2024. (PTI)

‘Very difficult’ to be part of alliance with Congress if it doesn’t denounce Delhi ordinance: AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said Friday that unless the Congress publicly denounces the ordinance passed by the Centre, which was promulgated in Delhi to take control of governance away from the elected government, it would be “very difficult” for the party to be part of any alliance that includes Congress.

The statement comes after a meeting of 15 Opposition parties was held in Bihar’s Patna to discuss an anti-BJP alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

“Congress’ hesitation and refusal to act as a team player, especially on an issue as important as this one, would make it very difficult for the AAP to be a part of any alliance that includes Congress. Until the Congress publicly denounces the Black Ordinance and declares that all 31 of its RS MPs will oppose the ordinance in the Rajya Sabha, it will be difficult for AAP to participate in future meetings of like-minded parties where the Congress is a participant,” AAP said in a statement. Opposition parties have to show big heart in national interest: Shiv Sena (UBT) ahead of Patna meet

Ahead of the meeting of Opposition parties in Patna, the Shiv Sena (UBT) on Friday said if democracy has to survive after 2024, then political parties will have to show a big heart in national interest to instil confidence among voters.

In an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana', the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and K Chandrasekhar Roa-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have national ambitions, but this will help Prime Minister Narendra Modi indirectly and support "dictatorship".

Both these parties are in direct contest with the Congress and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in different states. The BRS has been holding rallies in Maharashtra, in a bid to make a foray into the state.

"If democracy has to survive after 2024, then political leaders have to show a big heart for national interest. If all come together, then it will instil confidence among voters," it said.

The editorial said that PM Modi's attempt will be to break the opposition unity by some way or the other.

The BJP will be defeated if there is a direct fight on 450 seats. Many states have shown that despite the tricks, Modi can be defeated, it added.

The rulers who do not believe in law, Constitution and judiciary, can be defeated if opposition leaders earnestly deliberate in the Patna meeting, the Sena (UBT) said.

It will be wrong to say that those opposing the BJP are meeting in Patna, but it is appropriate to say that "patriotic" parties are coming together to save the Constitution and democracy in the country, it said.

The country is heading towards the path of dictatorship. Democracy and freedom are in danger in the country. Modi and his party are of the firm opinion that the opposition must be finished by using central agencies, the party said.

All these are signs of dictatorship, it added. (PTI)

'Scared' Opposition leaders gathering in Patna to protect own interests: Ravi Kishan

Opposition leaders are "scared" and are gathering in Patna to protect their "own interests", BJP MP and actor Ravi Kishan charged on Thursday, a day before a scheduled meeting of Opposition parties in Bihar's capital.

"People born in air-conditioned rooms will not be able to stand in front of (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi.... The Opposition has no face. Don't know what welfare they will do for the country. They are gathering in Patna for their own interests," he told reporters here.

He asserted that his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win 400 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

"The opposition will lose the election badly.... Only a handful of people in the country are opposing the Modi government by appearing in TV and newspapers. Modi is the voice of 140 crore people," the Lok Sabha member from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh said.

"Leaders of Opposition parties are scared of action by ED (Enforcement Directorate). They are out on bail, everyone is scared...the scared Opposition has come together," he said.

Targeting the Congress, Ravi Kishan said its leaders are always making trips to abroad and do not have any time left for villages of the country.

"The Congress party destroyed the country and the countryside," he charged.

Targeting the Samajwadi Party, he said its president Akhilesh Yadav doesn't like the Yogi Adityanath government because it has put an end to the mafia raj in Uttar Pradesh. (PTI)

Hi!

Follow us as we bring you all the live updates from the first joint meeting of Opposition parties in Patna

Road to 2024 | The great Opposition unity plans, and the many imponderables

On June 23, top Opposition leaders will converge in Patna to begin discussions on formation of a broad front against the BJP. For many parties, it is a political alliance of necessity in view of next year’s crucial Lok Sabha elections. For the opponents of some – such as Arvind Kejriwal, Nitish Kumar and Sharad Pawar – it is yet another turn by them in the art of political and personal convenience. They point to Sunday’s return to the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi by Kejriwal, this time for a rally against the Centre’s ordinance for control of services in the national capital where, seated next to him, was Rajya Sabha MP and former Congress Union minister Kapil Sibal. As a Congress leader, Sibal was one of the top names in the Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo’s list of “corrupt”. During the initial years of the Anna Hazare agitation, of which Kejriwal was a crucial part, and later, the AAP’s compilation of such names ran long. It is another matter that Kejriwal would go on to “apologise” to most of them to get out of defamation cases, including to Sibal and his son Amit. (Kejriwal had accused Amit of conflict of interest, saying he had appeared in court for a telecom firm while his father was the Communications Minister.)
