A delegation of Opposition MPs hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a memorandum submitted to the Manipur Governor, saying that his “silence” over the continuing violence in the state showed his “brazen indifference”.
A delegation of 21 MPs belonging to the Opposition’s India National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) met Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey Sunday to discuss their observations from visits to relief camps and interactions with those affected by the ethnic violence engulfing the state since the beginning of May.
They also submitted a memorandum, asking her to restore peace and normalcy in the state, and apprise the Centre of “complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur for the last 89 days”.
The memorandum states that the delegation visited relief camps in Churachandpur, Imphal and Moirang. “We are, indeed, very shocked and sad to hear the stories of anxieties, uncertainties, pains and sorrows of the individuals affected by the unprecedented violence unleashed by both sides since the beginning of the clashes. There is an anger and a sense of alienation amongst all communities, which has to be addressed without delay.”

It added, “The failure of both the Central and the state government to protect the lives and properties of the people of the two communities is apparent from the figures of more than 140 deaths, more than 500 injuries, burning of more than 5,000 houses, and internal displacement of more than 60,000 people.”
The memorandum also said that the state machinery has “completely failed” to control the situation in Manipur.
It went on to talk about the living conditions in the relief camps, calling it “pathetic”. “Special care needs to be taken for the kids on a priority basis,” it said. “Students from different streams are facing uncertain future, which has to be the priority of the state and the Union governments.”
The letter also said, “The continued internet ban for the last three months is adding to the unsubstantiated rumours which is adding to the existing mistrust. Silence of Hon’ble Prime Minister shows his brazen indifference to the violence in Manipur.”
The delegation is in the state for a two-day visit. On Saturday, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had made it clear that they weren’t in the state to do politics as the ethnic conflict in Manipur has damaged India’s image. “We have come here to meet victims of ethnic clashes and understand the problem. We want the end of violence and the restoration of peace at the earliest… the entire world is watching what is going on in Manipur,” he said.
