Ride-hailing multinational company Uber on Monday launched its first water transport service in Kashmir, bringing the option to book shikaras through its mobile app.

Uber Shikara will allow tourists in Srinagar the option to pre-book their boat rides on the Dal Lake through their app. “The limited-period product will help tourists pre-book their shikara rides through the Uber app in advance so that they are all set to enjoy the scenic beauty of Dal Lake in Srinagar during the upcoming busy holiday season,” the company said in a statement.

J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha congratulated all stakeholders of the tourism sector of J&K on the launch of Uber Shikara. Commending Uber for their futuristic vision, he said the Uber Shikara in Srinagar is “a testament to creative ways technology can enhance our cultural heritage.”

Prabhjeet Singh, president, Uber India and South Asia said, “We are always looking to make mobility magical and effortless. Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition to give a seamless experience to travellers.”

As part of the initiative, Uber has stated that the entire cost of the ride will be compensated to the Shikara drivers, without Uber taking a cut, creating additional economic opportunities for the grassroots tourism workers in J&K. Each Uber Shikara ride can be booked for a period of 1 hour, up to four passengers. Uber Shikara rides can be booked 12 hours prior and up to 15 days in advance, the company said.

The shikaras will be available at predetermined government rates at the Dal Lake.
