After a power failure at the High Court of J&K and Ladakh on Monday left its courtrooms without lights and heating, a division bench of the court sought a “permanent solution” from the UT administration.
In its order issued on Monday, the Srinagar wing of the High Court stated, “During court hours, the High Court has suffered a complete power failure. The generator is also not working. There are no lights. The air heating unit is also not functional.”
Terming the issue ”pathetic and unbelievable”, the court said, “The power failure has taken place at about 09:45 am and has still not been restored when this order is passed at about 11.28 am. The matter has gone from bad to worse.”
Seeking a permanent solution to the issue of power cuts in the court, judges Mokha Khajuria Kazmi and Atul Sreedharan sought the assistance of J&K Chief Secretary to “pass necessary orders to solve this problem forthwith”.
The solution, the order states, may include “having a separate power line to the High Court which does not experience any downtime and is supported by generators that can power the court and the air heating unit”.
The matter has been listed for February 21 “at the top of the list” for further orders.
J&K has seen severe power cuts through the winter and with incessant rains over the last two days, temperatures have plummeted to single digits again. The J&K administration has stated that the power cuts are due to reduced generation in its hydro power plants.
