The Assam government Saturday issued a dress code for school teachers, stating this became “necessary” because of some teachers being in the “habit” of dressing in a way not “acceptable by public at large (sic)”.
Among the clothes barred as per the notification, issued by the Department of School Education, are t-shirts and jeans for men and women teachers, and leggings for women teachers.
The notification states that all teachers have to be dressed in “clean, modest and decent clothes in sober colours, which should not look flashy”. It also states that “casual and party apparel should be strictly avoided”.
There are some misgivings regarding dress code prescribed for school teachers. I am sharing the notification for clarity. pic.twitter.com/m4k3sQW4t6

The clothes the government has prescribed for male teachers are formal shirts and pants, while female teachers have been instructed to dress in “decent” salwar suits, saris and mekhela chadors.
“Since a teacher is expected to be an example of all sorts of decency especially while discharging their duties, it has become necessary to follow a dress code that should reflect a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism and seriousness of purpose at the workplace,” states the notification.
